Four letters decide how long the install takes, what happens in year six, and in a lot of territories whether the utility pays you anything at all. Here is what Type A, Type B, Type C and hybrid actually mean on the truck.
The short version

Type A, plug and play
The tube contains its own driver circuitry designed to accept the output of a fluorescent ballast. You pull the old lamp, put the new one in, and walk away. On a building with a thousand lamps that speed is the entire argument.
What you give up. The ballast stays in the circuit, which means it is still drawing power, still aging, and still the thing that will fail. When it goes, the LED tube goes dark even though the tube itself is fine, and now you are opening the fixture anyway, several years later, at a worse hourly rate.
You also have to check ballast compatibility. Manufacturers publish compatibility lists by ballast model, and an incompatible pairing shows up as flicker, a shortened life, or a tube that simply does not strike. If the building has a mix of ballasts from three decades, that list matters.
Type B, ballast bypass
The driver moves inside the tube. You remove the ballast completely and run line voltage straight to the lamp holders. Highest efficiency of the three, one less component to fail, and no compatibility list to check because there is no ballast left to be compatible with.
The cost is labor and a wiring decision.
Single ended versus double ended

This is the mistake that costs a callback. Single ended tubes into shunted sockets is a dead short. Existing T8 fixtures with instant start ballasts usually have shunted sockets, which means single ended Type B needs new lamp holders on top of the rewire. Double ended Type B avoids that entirely. Test with a meter before you order a pallet.
Safety and labeling
Once the ballast is out, the sockets are energized at line voltage whenever the switch is on. Anyone who opens that fixture in five years needs to know that. Every Type B tube ships with a label for exactly this reason, and putting it on the fixture is part of the job, not an optional extra.
Type C, remote driver
An external LED driver mounts in the fixture and feeds the tubes. It gives the best efficiency and the only genuinely good dimming of the three, and the driver can be replaced without replacing the tubes.
It is also the most parts, the most labor and the most cost, which is why it shows up mainly on projects where dimming or daylight harvesting is part of the design rather than on straight one for one relamps.
Hybrid, the hedge
A hybrid tube works on the existing ballast today and on line voltage tomorrow. Install it as plug and play, and when the ballast eventually fails, bypass that fixture instead of replacing the ballast.
It costs a little more per tube and it is often the right answer for a large building where you cannot take the downtime for a full rewire now but do not want to be replacing ballasts for the next decade either.
How the choice affects your rebate
This is the part that gets skipped, and it is often worth more than the labor difference.
Many utility prescriptive tables treat a lamp only replacement differently from a ballast bypass retrofit, because leaving the ballast in place leaves ballast losses in the building. Some programs pay a lower per lamp amount for Type A. Some will not pay for it at all and require the ballast to be removed. Others do not distinguish. It varies by territory and it changes year to year.
Before you quote a thousand lamp relamp on Type A because it is faster, check what the utility pays for each path. On a big count, a rebate that only applies to bypass can more than fund the extra labor. Our rebate guide covers what the programs ask for.
DLC listing still applies to tubes. Replacement lamps have their own DLC category, and the tube has to be on the Qualified Products List on the installation date for the claim to pay. The listing is shown on every tube product page here.
Picking one
- Large count, tight schedule, ballasts are recent. Type A or hybrid. Get the light level up now, deal with ballasts as they fail.
- Ballasts are older than about ten years. Type B. You are opening the fixture within a few years anyway, so do it once.
- Existing sockets are shunted and you are not replacing them. Double ended Type B, or hybrid.
- Dimming or daylight harvesting is in the design. Type C, or step back and consider whether a new fixture is the better answer.
- The utility only pays for bypass. Type B, and let the incentive cover the labor.
One more question worth asking
If the existing fixtures are damaged, yellowed, or the lens is brittle, a tube retrofit puts new light into an old housing that will still look old. Compare the tube job against a new strip fixture or panel before you commit. On a lot of buildings the fixture swap costs less than people assume once the rebate lands, and the result is a building that looks renovated rather than relamped.
